Find Your (and your team's) True Fun for Well-being

To build community and make sure I’m always growing I’ve made networking a priority this year. One recent meeting was a lovely call I took on my patio with a new facilitator connection. (I vote NO to zoom calls these days.)

This facilitator recommended the book The Power of Fun by Catherine Price. Hey, I thought, I like fun and I could always use more! So I read the book and am excited to share some nuggets with you. Also, check out Price’s TED Talk.

Price combines her own findings with other research to explain why fun is the secret to a happier more balanced life. But not just any kind of fun, true fun – the sweet spot where playfulness, flow, and connection meet.

Many of our experiences may meet 2 of out of the 3 conditions, which is great, but to really energize ourselves we need to create more situations that feel like true fun. And, of course, everyone’s formula varies.

This got me thinking about designing experiences for teams and workplace fun in general, because so many of my clients have said to me:

We hate "Forced Fun."

DUH. YES. Who doesn’t?

So then, how might we design more fun experiences that motivate ourselves and our team members?

True fun reduces stress and burnout, and boosts well-being. Happy employees are more engaged. More engaged employees show up, take risks, go above and beyond what’s expected of them to achieve business objectives.

Work can and should be fun. But don’t force it. Be intentional.
