The Resource

My friend, fellow facilitator, learning designer, and improviser, Gary Ware wrote a book recently called Playful Rebellion. He shares are a ton of great tips and tools to fight burnout and bring more joy into your life.

The first step is to understand which activities get you into a play state and then do more of those. Why?

More play = ⬆️ Happiness ⬆️ Creativity ⬆️ Well-being ⬆️ Engaged employees

The Exercise (~15 min)

  1. Read these 8 play personalities, coined by Dr. Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute of Play. Which one(s) are your default? Unsure? Think back to being a kid and what you loved to do the most.

  2. In your life, right now, on a scale of 1-5 how often do you engage in this type(s) of play? (1=rarely, 5=often)

  3. Which type(s) of play do you want to do MORE OF?

  4. How will you integrate more of these activities and when?

My Example:

  • I tend towards the creator/artist, the kinesthete, and the storyteller.

  • creator/artist = 2 / kinesthete = 3 / Storyteller = 5

  • I want to do more creator/artist play like drawing, and more intense kinesthete like cycling.

  • I now keep drawing pencils and paper on the kitchen to draw with my daughter. She loves to draw every morning.

  • I signed up for an indoor cycling class next week.

Stay human & play more,

Lisa
