Self-Awareness + Core Values

HBO.com

The other night I stumbled across the documentary aka Mr. Chow on HBO (or is it Max now? What? Why? Sorry, can’t call it that), and what a delight! I had no idea who he is, and as a curious-about-people person this really hit the spot.

M (aka Mr. Chow) has worn many creative hats in his life: painter, actor, restaurateur, host, and now painter again in his mid-80’s.

His perseverance and adaptability struck me the most because no matter what professional pivot he made, he always stayed to true to his core values of creativity and connecting people.

"I believe that through art and food we can communicate and harmonize to counter the violence that goes on in the world."

The end of the year is a perfect time to explore or revisit your values. Honing those can help you set goals for next year. And since our values shift as we grow, I recommend doing this exercise every few years.

Two Key Questions:

  • What are your core values?

  • How frequently are you living out each of these values?

For example my core values = Freedom, Humor, Creativity, Curiosity. I plan to work on the Freedom more by traveling for work and pleasure next year.
