This week in the news of being a woman:

  • Harvey Weinstein turned himself in to police for rape and sexual abuse while wearing a baby blue sweater, holding 3 books, and smirking. He pleaded 'not guilty.'

    • Pro Tip: He is guilty AF.

  • A worker on the street called something out to me about my clothing, but I didn't answer because I don't speak to strangers on the street who yell random things out (I've lived in NYC for 17 years, I know what's up). When I didn't answer his coworker shouted, "Miss, I'd like to have a friend like you." I kept walking.

    • Pro Tip: If you want me to respond to you, speak to me like a human being with dignity and use a phrase like, "Excuse me.”

  • In my writing class I was interrupted by a man and when the instructor (a woman) called him out, he turned to me and said: “Sorry-ish.”

    • Pro Tip: A sorry with an -ish at the end is not an apology.

As you can see my partners at BeSpoken and I are leading our June 4th workshop for women for many reasons: Reasons from our past, from our present, for our future and the futures of our little girls. This event has grown out of our personal experiences from our workplaces, our homes, our classes, our walks down the street, and guess what?

We are angry. And we will not apologize for it.

But it is our anger that fuels us to be strong, to empower others, to share tools and strategies, and to listen to and learn from other women’s stories. We are gearing up, arming ourselves with our voices, bodies, and words because in the words of Abby Wambach: “We are wolves.”

Please join our pack on 6/4 @ 6:30-9pm. Tickets here. All proceeds go to support the New Women Space.
