Leadership: How do others experience you?

Recently I heard Dr. Linda Hill – Harvard Business School professor, leadership expert, and author – speak and I was so excited by everything she said I failed at taking notes.

I have a few bullets on half a page with a bunch of !!! and then I just listened hoping some of her knowledge would stick on my brain.

One point that resonated (!!!) with me…

“Leaders worry more about competence. How am I perceived? Rather than how do people perceive my character?”

To hear more of Dr. Hill’s thoughts, research, and leadership nuggets, watch this interview with Harvard Business Review, or read her books.

She highlights 3 leadership imperatives, the 1st being manage yourself. Because leadership is about creating an emotional connection with other people in order to guide them toward a shared goal. This is why every Follow the Fear manager training begins with space to develop self-awareness.

In my March One+One newsletter, I share my absolute favorite exercise to do on your own and then with others who you work with (or for personal development, friends and family).
